Abstract:

Collection consists of California land tenure documents collected and compiled by the Bancroft Library in the early to middle of the twentieth century. Included are homestead and other federal land grant documents, U.S. war bounty land warrants, expediente (Spanish and Mexican land documents), and other materials relating to land tenure in California.

Geer (San Francisco, 1877; Oregon Volunteers; Cayuse War); Rachel Gilpin, widow of John Gilpin (San Francisco, 1878; War of 1812); Catherine Proctor, widow of James Proctor (San Francisco, 1887, War of 1812).
Photostats of expediente and diseño documents for the following ranchos, lands, and individuals: Rincon de Las Salinas (San Francisco County), Plan del Tucho (Monterey County), Isla de Yeguras or Mare Island, Rancho de San Pablo, Campo de los Franceses, and Martina de Castro (Monterey).
Placer mining claim of William H. Hilton and Forbes McPherson for land in Tuolumne County (1872), a letters patent from the state of California to Charles C. Clark for 80 acres of in Santa Cruz County (1890), an 1852 U.S. land patent to Fulgencio Higuera (Agua Caliente), and a photocopy of a patent to José Maria for Rancho Cañada de los Nogales (1882).
